Albany Audubon Birding Watching
The Albany Audubon Chapter has designated this trail as one of the best local hotspots for observing migrating fall warblers! Access the head of the birding trail at the Dougherty County Riverfront Park and continue on the paved path for the remainder of the walk. The path first zigzags east directly toward the river and then turns North (left fork taking you to a wet ditch 50 feet ahead; right fork taking you underneath a train trestle alongside the river for the remainder of the walk). The first ¼ to ½ mile of the birding walk is the most productive for fall migrants. This total trail is approximately 3 miles in length. The Riverfront/Greenway Trail is located in downtown Albany just east of the Flint RiverQuarium. The open park area has been good for Loggerhead Shrikes (nesting pair in 2010), Eastern Kingbirds and Mississippi Kites. But for fall migrants, wood warblers, tanagers, vireos, grosbeaks and orioles can be observed. 35 species of warblers have been located on this short trek! 26 warbler species have been observed at this sight in one fall season. One interesting tip: spend time at the creek just north of the train trestle at the first footbridge. Many migrants like to bathe on the east and especially west sides of the footbridge.
