Day One:

Visit the Albany Civil Rights Institute. Considered the crown jewel of Albany’s African-American history, the institute is both a museum and an educational space. For those interested in this incredible phase of Georgia’s history, the Institute, located in the renovated 1906 structure of the Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church – one of Dr. King’s main speaking locations – is the premier repository for Albany’s African American civil and human rights legacy. Come hear the song of the Freedom Singers perform the second Saturday of each month.

Lunch
A short walk brings you into Downtown Albany where you may choose from an array of restaurants ranging from Italian to sandwiches, salads and chili. While downtown, be sure to check out the new Ray Charles Plaza.
12:30 – 1:30pm
Tour The Chehaw with a 100-acre AZA-accredited zoo, the only one in Georgia outside of Atlanta, and originally designed by naturalist Jim Fowler. With advance notice visitors can dine with cheetahs and rhinos, or experience the new Meerkat exhibit. Stroll along shaded nature trails while the kids play in the state’s largest play park. The park is filled with camping and picnic sites and boasts a BMX bicycle motor cross track.

1:30 – 3pm
Thronateeska Heritage Center at Union Station offers something for the entire family. Heritage Plaza showcases a late 1800’s house, the Railway Express Agency Building, an original 1857 Train Depot and the only brick street left in Albany. Check out these four Thronateeska attractions, all located in Heritage Plaza: Wetherbee Planetarium; Science Discover Center; the Model Train Exhibit; and the Museum of History.

3 – 5:30pm
Discover the amazing and unique Flint RiverQuarium and IMAX Imagination Theatre. The RiverQuarium features natural habitats of the Flint River, including a 175,000 gallon blue hole spring aquarium, and exhibits high-tech, interactive explorations into the watery world. Morning
Tour the Albany Area Arts Council showcasing local art and exhibits, housed in the historic Circa 1906 Carnegie Library and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

With American Museum of Art accreditation, the Albany Museum of Art hosts national traveling exhibits each year and is home to the largest collection of African art objects in the Southeast. Kids always enjoy the Amazing Spaces interactive art room.

Picnic Lunch
Bring your picnic blanket and goody basket and claim a spot at Hillsman Park. This lime sink recreational park is lined with azaleas and dogwood trees, providing beautiful scenery for a relaxing lunch.
Afternoon
Time for optional activities! Albany has a great selection of golf courses and plantations for quail hunting - so plan ahead to experience some relaxing, Southern recreation. Consider visiting one of our day spas or browsing through some boutiques around town.
