Spring Weather Brings Albany Adventures
Posted on 3/16/2015 by Rashelle
Posted within: Family Friendly‚ History‚ Outdoor‚ Sports‚ TravelThe past two weeks have seen the temperature hit the lower 80s during the day. As the trees and bushes are starting to bloom, cars are starting to have a slight yellow tint. Restaurant patios and parks are starting to have lunch guests. Spring has definitely sprung in South Georgia and I couldn’t be happier. I love spring weather. It is the perfect time to enjoy the world’s natural beauty. Before it gets too warm (hello, humidity) and too buggy (oh, hey, gnats), let’s enjoy Albany’s great outdoors. Between bicycle trips, hiking trails, river adventures, relaxation and more, Albany (and this list) has something for everyone. Without further ado, here is your outdoor guide to Visiting Albany, Georgia: Go

Posted within: Family Friendly‚ History‚ TravelAn incredible museum space tells the story of Albany’s battle for social justice ALBANY, GEORGIA – February, 2015 – Located on the Flint River in southwest Georgia, an ideal stopping point when en route to/from Savannah and Charleston or even Florida, Albany is a can’t miss stop for exploring America’s Black History. Beginning with the city’s historic antebellum Welcome Center, designed and built by former slave and noted engineer Horace King, roots of history run deep here. In ‘Selma,’ the new film about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts to spread social change in the South, you may have caught references to the Albany Movement, an early attempt and a key step in the ultimate battle for civil liberties. Today, The Albany Civil Rights Institute commemorates the Albany Movement and the battle for social justice in small-town Georgia. TIP: Start with the film presentation at the Institute, a moving beginning to a visit here. Go

The Albany Movement
Posted on 5/30/2014 by Rashelle
Posted within: HistoryEarlier this month, the Albany Civil Rights Institute held its first annual Community Service Gala, selling out tables at the Hilton, and making our community so very proud. It occurs to us, though, that there are so many southerners and even Georgians who aren’t aware of Albany’s significance in the American Civil Rights Movement, or why we have a Civil Rights Institute here. Sometimes, painful events in history are glossed over in school or even left out entirely to spare participants the ache of re-opening old wounds, but as time marches on, successive generations may forget about these events entirely. The Color Me Rad 5k
Posted on 4/28/2014 by Rashelle
Posted within: Events‚ Outdoor‚ TravelWould you describe Albany, Georgia as “colorful”? We sure would! Not only do we have some of the richest and history and culture in Georgia (which is bursting with history and culture-rich places), but we’ve got creativity coming out of our ears. Have you checked out the Art Park on Pine yet? Well, what are you waiting for?! It’s an outdoor, open-air community art gallery featuring pieces by some of our most talented locals. In the sense of urban renewal, the Art Park has repurposed one of the oldest facades in Albany – one that, at one point, was eyed for demolition when the Art Park idea was created. The space is also an event facility available for performances and gatherings, like the after party for the Color Me Rad 5k. The Color Me Rad 5k, which will take place this year on October 5, is an event benefitting a local charity featuring literal bursts of color in the form of colored corn starch exploding all over the runners as they make their way through the course.
