What is the Flint River?
For those who aren’t familiar with the Flint River, this scenic water system stretches 344 miles and passes through Lake Blackshear and Lake Chehaw before it meets the Chattahoochee River. In Albany, the Flint River spans a 70-mile stretch that is perfect for paddling, featuring a variety of limestone banks and rapids-filled waters. You’ll see a variety of native wildlife during your water adventure, including Shoal Bass, freshwater mussels and catfish. Many visitors enjoy floating down the Flint River to take in the scenic views and spot the local wildlife!
Where to Launch Your Kayak
There are multiple public ramps and launches in Albany where you can get started on your kayak adventure! Riverfront Park is a six-acre park and popular launch spot in the heart of Albany with easy access to the Flint River. Farther along the lower Flint River is Cox Base Landing, which can be accessed off of Barsetts Ferry Road. This ramp is a popular spot for boaters and kayakers alike. Depending on where you launch, your float time can range from an hour to seven hours! If you’re interested in enjoying more time on the water, Radium Springs landing is a great place to launch from, and you can take the river all the way to Flint River Outpost for an 8–9-mile trip. A great aspect of this route is that you’ll also get to experience Radium Springs, which is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia! Another place where you can launch at is The Georgia Power Dam Trailrace Landing, which is located at Lake Worth.
