Celebrate National Historic Preservation Month in Albany, Georgia with this fun list of things to learn and do! This year’s celebration focuses on the theme of “People Saving Places.” Albany, Georgia residents and visitors can be the people to help save places in big and small ways.
First, gather your friends and family and set out on the Albany/Dougherty County Preservation Scavenger Hunt. See the city of Albany, Georgia with new eyes as you visit new and often forgotten places. Test your knowledge of Albany, Georgia’s history through questions about places, people, and events. After your team has completed the hunt, your team will be submitted for a prize given to the top three competitors. The scavenger hunt will end May 31st and winners will be announced in early June.
Spend your time keeping the city of Albany, Georgia beautiful! Join Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful volunteers at their community clean-ups. Whether Albany, Georgia is your home or a place you enjoy visiting, be a person saving places. Two community clean-ups will be hosted to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month. Join the community clean-up of Dougherty High School Area on May 18 from 8 am until 10 am. The second community clean-up will be located at Westover Rd and Gillionville Rd on June 15 from 8 am until 10 am.
Visit Thronateeska Heritage Center for a Lunch & Learn hosted by the Albany/Dougherty Historic Preservation Committee in the Chautauqua Room on May 17 at 2:30 pm. Learn more about Albany, Georgia’s presentation efforts, hear about Albany, Georgia’s adaptive use of buildings, and receive education about the preservation of documents. Can’t make it on May 17th? Attend their preservation talk on May 24th at 1 pm in Thronateeska’s Chautauqua Room.
See beauty be added to Albany, Georgia as muralist Ramiro-Davaro-Comas of Super Stories partners with the Albany Museum of Art’s teen board to create a mural in Downtown Albany, Georgia. The mural will be visible to commuters and visitors as they travel in Downtown Albany at the intersection of Pine and Jackson Avenue or between The Cookie Shoppe and Dougherty County Library’s Central Branch. The mural will add to Albany Georgia’s developing art trail.
