Albany, Georgia Rocks a Long Musical History
Posted on 4/17/2015 by Rashelle
Posted within: Arts‚ History‚ TravelOne thing is for sure – Albany, Georgia really knows how to rock! When you come to Albany, you’ll almost certainly stop and see our rotating monument to Ray Charles on Front Street. Plenty of people know that the soul pioneer was an Albany native, born here in 1930, and lots of people also know how proud we are of our most recent hometown musical celebrities, Luke Bryan and Phillip Phillips. Country star Luke Bryan was born in the suburb of Leesburg, and got his start as a songwriter for the likes of Billy Currington and Travis Tritt before recording his own albums and shooting to stardom. And 11th American Idol Phillip Phillips was born right here in Albany and grew up in Bryan’s hometown of Leesburg, winning the 2010 “Albany Star” competition before going on to be the American Idol champion with the best-selling ‘coronation single’ to date. Albany appetites are Georgia grown
Posted on 4/17/2015 by Rashelle
Posted within: Family Friendly‚ TravelGrowing up, I was fortunate to have a set of grandparents that loved fresh vegetables and fruit. We would visit and spend a good portion of our weekend shucking corn or shelling beans. The reward? All that delicious, fresh cooking that I always related to my grandmother’s house. Unfortunately, I lost the chance for her creamed corn in 2012 when Ed Nanny moved on to a higher place. (No one’s pecan pie or green beans will ever compare). But, it taught me to appreciate the local produce wherever I was living. Go

The Color Me Rad 5k
Posted on 4/28/2014 by Rashelle
Posted within: Events‚ Outdoor‚ TravelWould you describe Albany, Georgia as “colorful”? We sure would! Not only do we have some of the richest and history and culture in Georgia (which is bursting with history and culture-rich places), but we’ve got creativity coming out of our ears. Have you checked out the Art Park on Pine yet? Well, what are you waiting for?! It’s an outdoor, open-air community art gallery featuring pieces by some of our most talented locals. In the sense of urban renewal, the Art Park has repurposed one of the oldest facades in Albany – one that, at one point, was eyed for demolition when the Art Park idea was created. The space is also an event facility available for performances and gatherings, like the after party for the Color Me Rad 5k. The Color Me Rad 5k, which will take place this year on October 5, is an event benefitting a local charity featuring literal bursts of color in the form of colored corn starch exploding all over the runners as they make their way through the course.
