We are highlighting 50 challenges to encourage you to discover or rediscover why you #LoveABY. It is summertime! This is a great time to get out and enjoy time with friends, family and even coworkers. To make it easy, we have developed the #ILoveABY Scavenger Hunt! Although there are a few challenges that may require an entrance fee, this activity is free to participate. To win, creativity will be key. Starting with Position 1 at Chehaw Parks Disc Golf course to a group selfie with the Albany Welcome Center Staff, you can experience new places and meet new friends throughout Albany. Teams can make a fun day trip or fun-filled weekend out of this scavenger hunt. We even incorporated activities like taking a brisk bike ride on the Riverfront Greenway Trail, where the ½ mile marker makes the perfect water break and snap a selfie. Your team can mark off reading the Discover Albany Brochure while renting bikes at the Albany Welcome Center. Then, reward the team with a break at the king of popcorn before heading next door to Pretoria Fields for cold brews, relaxing tunes, and another opportunity to score a point by snapping a shot with staff members. Not of age to enjoy the cold brew, grab a soda. Everyone can enjoy life size Jenga, cornhole and family games. Or just be weird, ask to take a selfie and run out. Riddle me this riddle me that, the hints range from easy to difficult. But we give you a chance for bonus points. A team who includes a video of their hunt, at least 30-60 seconds long, with the photos will get 8 bonus points. Be sure to show your team’s creativity, quality, and awesomeness. Albany, Georgia Rocks a Long Musical History
Posted on 4/17/2015 by Rashelle
Posted within: Arts‚ History‚ TravelOne thing is for sure – Albany, Georgia really knows how to rock! When you come to Albany, you’ll almost certainly stop and see our rotating monument to Ray Charles on Front Street. Plenty of people know that the soul pioneer was an Albany native, born here in 1930, and lots of people also know how proud we are of our most recent hometown musical celebrities, Luke Bryan and Phillip Phillips. Country star Luke Bryan was born in the suburb of Leesburg, and got his start as a songwriter for the likes of Billy Currington and Travis Tritt before recording his own albums and shooting to stardom. And 11th American Idol Phillip Phillips was born right here in Albany and grew up in Bryan’s hometown of Leesburg, winning the 2010 “Albany Star” competition before going on to be the American Idol champion with the best-selling ‘coronation single’ to date. Spring Weather Brings Albany Adventures

Posted within: Family Friendly‚ History‚ Outdoor‚ Sports‚ TravelThe past two weeks have seen the temperature hit the lower 80s during the day. As the trees and bushes are starting to bloom, cars are starting to have a slight yellow tint. Restaurant patios and parks are starting to have lunch guests. Before it gets too warm (hello, humidity) and too buggy (oh, hey, gnats), let’s enjoy Albany’s great outdoors. Between bicycle trips, hiking trails, river adventures, relaxation and more, Albany (and this list) has something for everyone. The Albany Civil Rights Institute honors the music and memories of a movement

Posted within: Family Friendly‚ History‚ TravelAn incredible museum space tells the story of Albany’s battle for social justice ALBANY, GEORGIA – February, 2015 – Located on the Flint River in southwest Georgia, an ideal stopping point when en route to/from Savannah and Charleston or even Florida, Albany is a can’t miss stop for exploring America’s Black History. Beginning with the city’s historic antebellum Welcome Center, designed and built by former slave and noted engineer Horace King, roots of history run deep here. In ‘Selma,’ the new film about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts to spread social change in the South, you may have caught references to the Albany Movement, an early attempt and a key step in the ultimate battle for civil liberties. Today, The Albany Civil Rights Institute commemorates the Albany Movement and the battle for social justice in small-town Georgia. TIP: Start with the film presentation at the Institute, a moving beginning to a visit here. Go

The Albany Movement
Posted on 5/30/2014 by Rashelle
Posted within: HistoryEarlier this month, the Albany Civil Rights Institute held its first annual Community Service Gala, selling out tables at the Hilton, and making our community so very proud. It occurs to us, though, that there are so many southerners and even Georgians who aren’t aware of Albany’s significance in the American Civil Rights Movement, or why we have a Civil Rights Institute here. Sometimes, painful events in history are glossed over in school or even left out entirely to spare participants the ache of re-opening old wounds, but as time marches on, successive generations may forget about these events entirely.
