Legacy of The Freedom Singers
If you aren’t already familiar with The Freedom Singers, this legendary group was formed in 1962 by Bernice Johnson Reagon, Cordell Reagon, Charles Nesbett, and Rutha Mae Harris at Albany State College. The purpose behind The Freedom Singers was to raise funds and awareness for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Their iconic sound combined black Baptist a cappella church singing with popular music at the time to tell the story of the Civil Rights Movement. One of their most famous performances was “We Shall Not Be Moved,” which they sang during the March on Washington in 1963. The last original member, Rutha Mae Harris, continues to lead performances in Albany today to carry on that impactful legacy. For those who haven’t had the honor to hear The Freedom Singers perform live, you won’t want to miss this incredible opportunity!
