Civil Rights Footsteps Itinerary
Enjoy the day on a self-guided tour through Albany, Ga to learn more about the African American history and Civil Rights Movement. Visit local coffee shops and restaurants around the area while still feeling connected to Albany's deep history.
Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast and coffee at Cornerstone Coffee, a black and veteran owned coffee shop in the heart of Albany. Cornerstone is the first Christ-centered coffee shop in downtown Albany. Its owners, Stan and Ana Franklin, stepped out of their comfort zones to do what they were called to do, and opened a now beloved favorite for locals, coffee lovers, and tourists.
Morning: Begin your morning with a visit to the Bridge House. Built by legendary bridge builder and former slave Horace King in 1858, the Bridge House now operates as Albany Welcome Center. Our friendly staff will get you started on your self-guided tour of the Albany’s African American Heritage Trail.
Next make your way to Shiloh Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led Albany’s historic Civil Rights March to the Trailways Bus Station. The sidewalk in front of the church features footprints, symbolizing the courageous men, women, and children who took bold steps of civil disobedience in the fight for justice and equality. Across the street sits the Albany Civil Rights Institute.
Lunch: Spend your lunch at a historically significant restaurant, Jimmie’s Hot Dogs. Originating in 1947, still white owned and operated, the hotdog stand did not break the Jim Crow laws in 1947 because it was a hot dog stand with no table seating. Jimmie’s has served all patrons, no matter the race, and is still a community favorite today.
Late Afternoon: Exit Downtown Albany and head west to The Albany Museum of Art to witness exhibits related to black history and African culture. The museum offers free admission for a self-guided tour of their exhibits showcasing art from the South and the world.
Dinner: To end your day, wind down at the Albany Fish Company which offers a flavorsome menu that includes fresh seafood as well as southern style cooking. The Albany Fish Company is owned by well-known chef Glen Singfield, owner of upscale restaurant The Flint in Albany’s Downtown.
