The story behind this iconic hot dog establishment begins with a gentleman named Jimmie Baltas. He was born in 1889 in the beautiful country of Greece and at just 16 years old, he immigrated from Greece to Lowell, Massachusetts. Eventually, he found his way to Georgia, where he decided to establish Jimmie’s Hot Dogs in 1947. Located in the heart of Albany’s Harlem neighborhood, key features included a sign outside that read “The King of the Hot Dog”, a simple menu and no table seating. This is what started a legacy that still endures today. Jimmie ended up selling the business to Phillip Poulos, who in turn sold it to his relative Sam Poulous. After a falling out between Sam and his brother-in-law, Sam sold the restaurant to Tommy Mathes in 1992. In the early 90s during his early years of ownership, Tommy only changed a few things to the business, including adding cheese, slaw and relish to the menu for additional hot dog condiments. Besides that, not much has changed about Jimmie’s Hot Dogs except for the addition of another location in Lee County. He remains the owner to this day, keeping the history alive and a loyal fanbase of customers happy.

An important aspect of the stand’s history is its dedication to serving patrons of all races. During the era of Jim Crow laws, shared dining rooms between different races was strictly prohibited without the use of partitions. By only having standing room and operating as a hot dog stand, this establishment has been able to serve delicious chili hot dogs to all patrons. For sides, you can only select a bag of chips as they don’t do fries or additional sides.
