Christmas and Cheer at Chehaw

Believe it or not, y’all, the holidays are here! In Albany, this means that snowflakes, reindeer and, of course, Christmas lights are taking over the city (not that we’re complaining!). One place that is getting into the Holiday spirit is Chehaw Park. Chehaw will be hosting a Holiday Market and Bike Night on November 30 to kick off the holidays here in Albany. Throughout December, Chehaw also plays host to the Festival of Lights, a tradition that allows families, as they drive through the park, to take in the breathtaking beauty of Christmas lights hung throughout Chehaw.
One of the highlights of Christmas at Chehaw are the snowflakes hung from the trees, placed differently each year. This year, there will be around 70 snowflakes hung throughout the park. Each snowflake was made by hand and took up to five hours to create. The snowflakes were created in the summer of 2011, which was the first year that the Festival of Lights was hosted. Ken Braley, a member of the Chehaw team, was there when they were made and continues to hang them up today. He hopes to add even more snowflakes and new displays next year, but is excited about what the team has in store for lucky visitors this holiday season.
The events will kick off from 6 to 9 p.m., November 30, with Bike Night, which allows families to actively see the lights and get a sneak peek into what Chehaw has to offer this holiday season. Cars aren’t an option at this event; walking and biking are the modes of transportation, encouraging families to get out and get active while taking in the beauty. Though the annual train ride will not be available till December, this event offers a bonfire, food and unlimited trips through the beautiful lights. It costs $10 per person, $30 for a family of four and any additional person is $5 extra. Why wait till December to experience the magic when Chehaw is offering a fun-filled exclusive first look?
Parents, after wrangling in the kids and seeing all the lights, reward yourselves by perusing the items at the Second Annual Chehaw Holiday Market. It is the same night and time as the Bike Night. The event will showcase art by local vendors for sale and is an opportune time to pick up some Christmas gifts for Cousin Sue or your favorite next door neighbor. This event will take place inside the Creekside Center at Chehaw. It’s the perfect opportunity to warm up inside and check loved ones off your list.
The regular season for Festival of Lights will run throughout December, with Santa visiting the weekend of December 8-9, as well as the 15-23. His workshop will be located onsite, offering a picture-perfect moment for families as Santa sits by the fireplace, ready to learn what each boy and girl wants for Christmas. The train depot in the park will be offering 20 minute rides around the park and vendors will be onsite servings hot cocoa, along with other holiday favorites. It is $3 a ride and is always a crowd favorite. Guests can drive through a lit-up tunnel as well as experience the 12 days of Christmas. In addition, snow, (though fake) will be in the park. Hey, we’re in Southwest Georgia! Still, you can bet it’s all going to be magical.
