Have you ever been to an aquarium, perhaps the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta? Or maybe even Orlando’s Sea World? Albany has its own version of an aqua habitat and museum, but it’s way more special than an aquarium – it’s a RiverQuarium.  The Flint RiverQuarium is a one-of-a-kind adventure featuring a unique 175,000 gallon blue hole spring, one of the few open-air aquariums in the world. Following the Flint’s amazing 350-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico, the RiverQuarium offers a look at Southwest Georgia’s mysterious underwater world with more than 120 species of fish, alligators, turtles and other aquatic animals. The Cypress Pond Aviary is home to more than 30 kinds of birds indigenous to the Flint River watershed. Next door is the Adventure Center, which houses changing exhibitions, and the Imagination Theater, the area’s only large-screen format theater.

Regular programming at the RiverQuarium features weekly dive shows to be observed through the viewing window and included with regular admission. Various animal encounters also take place on the weekends throughout the facility.

Also on weekends, the Imagination Theater features a selection of films about aquatic creatures far and wide. Movie schedules can be found on the RiverQuarium’s website.

The first and third Sunday of each month are Discovery Days, fun-filled days of crafts, storytelling, live animal presentations and more from 2 pm to 4 pm. Each Discovery Day features a different theme, and kids receive a free F.U.N. passport to be stamped each Sunday visit.

The third Wednesday of each month is Tadpole Time, when parents and preschoolers can visit the RiverQuarium for a 45-minute story time, craft lesson, and a special look at the animals in residence.

The RiverQuarium also offers canoe trips, Sleep with the Fishes sleepovers, summer camps full of “ed-venture,” annual events, birthday party rentals and more.

For more information on programming or regular admission, visit the RiverQuarium’s official website, or call 1-877-GO-FLINT.
