Albany Marathon donates $25,000.00 to Willson Hospice House and Announces Future Plans
Aug 24, 2015
ALBANY, GA – Following the success of the 9th Annual Albany Marathon and Half Marathon, the Albany Marathon Board of Directors presented a ceremonial check of $25,000 to Willson Hospice House at a press conference on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 2PM.
Since its inaugural race in 2006, Albany Marathon, Inc. has been fortunate to consistently donate funds to the Willson Hospice House. “This check brings the total donations for the nine years of the marathon to $190, 000,” said Rashelle Beasley, Albany Marathon Race Director. “It’s an honor to produce an event that brings the community together and invites the world to our doorsteps… especially since the proceeds go to such a vital facility for Albany and Southwest Georgia.”
This year’s race welcomed 1,575 registrants from 38 states, Canada, Barbados, India, Colombia, and South Africa on March 7, 2015. Of those who finished, 23 percent qualified for the Boston Marathon. That statistic currently ranks Albany’s race as one of the top ten qualifiers.
In addition to the check presentation, the Albany Marathon announced it’s rebranding to the SNICKERS® Marathon and Half Marathon. The race originally started as the SNICKERS® MARATHON® Energy Bar Marathon and Half Marathon, to which the runners nicknamed it the SNICKERS® Marathon. MARS Chocolate Plant Manager, Mack Phillips took notice and recommended rebranding the race to the SNICKERS® Marathon and Half Marathon.
“Every peanut that goes into any SNICKERS® product is first roasted here. So working with our corporate branding and with Rashelle and team, we have been able to secure sponsorship going forward and will be re-branding the marathon as the SNICKERS® Marathon,” Said Phillips. “We believe the power of the brand will only help our promotions for the races as there are very few brands that are as recognizable as SNICKERS®.”
Scheduled annually for the first Saturday in March, the next race will run on March 5, 2016 at 7AM. The upcoming race will mark 10 years running. Special plans for the milestone are underway. Registration is now open through www.active.com and www.albanymarathon.com.
