Southeast Regional Series returns to Albany with Two-day Cycling Weekend

Apr 24, 2015

Greenville, S.C. (April 20, 2015) – The Southeast Regional Series presented by BikeReg (SRS) returns to Albany, Ga., May 16-17, with a new event lineup for the four-state competition. Male, female and masters (ages 35 and over) cyclists will compete in a special Omnium format, earning points for three races in two days: an individual time trial, criterium and road race.

It is the third consecutive year for Albany to host SRS, and the 11th year the city has hosted a bike race weekend. Racers and spectators can expect a full day of activities, including a Pepsi Taste Challenge, for the Albany Unchained: Time Trial and Criterium on Saturday. The Visit Albany Time Trial  will begin at 8 a.m. in downtown Albany, followed by a fast and flat criterium from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for nine different categories.

The Albany Unchained Road Race, hosted by the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau, begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, offering some of the best scenic vistas in the country. Racers will navigate a 34-mile loop just north of Albany through Leesburg.

“We are really excited to bring the Omnium format to the Southeast Regional Series,” said SRS Director Marilyn Cullinane, who also owns Start Smart Cycling in Greenville, S.C. “There are not many time trials offered to elite cyclists in the U.S. Having this ‘race against the clock’ in addition to the popular criterium and road race events really heightens the competition.”

Admission is free for spectators both days. Local sponsors include the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau, Albany Beverage, Albany Search and Rescue, Cumulus Media, Prince Automotive Group, U Save It Pharmacy and the Wingate by Wyndham, which serves as the official Albany host hotel.

The Southeast Regional Series presented by BikeReg expects to award over $30,000 in cash and prizes this year, along four weekends. It is the only road racing series for amateur and elite cycling teams which offers points competitions spanning multiple states. The series concludes in August in Greenville, S.C. when overall champions are crowned based on the season-long accumulated points in each race discipline- criterium and road race. Special award jerseys are presented each weekend for best sprinters, climbers and overall winners (male and female): SRS-Hincapie Sportswear Overall Leaders jersey, PEZ Cycling News Sprinters jersey, and BikeReg King/Queen of the Mountain jersey.

Athletes can race all three events to qualify for Omnium points, or just race the Criterium and Road Race for SRS points. Individuals and teams are encouraged to register early before fields close Thursday, May 14 at 11 p.m. Registration information, the complete SRS schedule and event updates are available on at www.srs-racing.com
