The Plastic Wave
Overview
The Plastic Wave, created by artist David Weeks, serves as a tribute to the Great Wave off Kanagawa while raising awareness about the global plastic crisis. This impressive 10-foot, 750-pound artwork illustrates the challenges faced by numerous ocean creatures in an environment filled with plastics that can take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to decompose. Debuting in 2021 as part of the artist's non-profit initiative, Plastic is Wack, the sculpture was donated to Flint RiverQuarium to support its mission of conservation education.
