New York State Capitol Building
Visit the Million Dollar Staircase, the Senate Chamber, or the War Room, and you will understand why people call it the most beautiful state capitol in the country. This elaborately carved stone building was constructed between 1867 and 1899, with help from five different architects. When construction was halted in 1899, the building costs totaled $25 million.
Empire State Plaza
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza - one of the most spectacular capital centers in the country. The Plaza exists because of the vision and determination of one man, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who wanted to create "the most electrifying capital in the world." To fulfill his purpose, Rockefeller commissioned Wallace K. Harrison, a personal friend and chief architect for Rockefeller Center, to be the principal architect for the Plaza. Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1978.
New York State Museum
The New York State Museum in Downtown Albany explores the cultural and natural history of New York State. The Museum features a variety of history, science and art exhibitions. Within the main exhibit halls are popular long-standing favorites, including Adirondack Wilderness, Birds of New York, Beneath the City: Albany Archeology, Black Capital: Harlem in the 20s, The Cohoes Mastodon, Fire Engine Hall, Minerals of New York, Native Peoples of New York, and The World Trade Center: Rescue, Recovery, Response. Nipper Statue
Across the long and rich history of Albany, Nipper ranks as the top dog. The twenty-eight-foot tall, four-ton steel and fiberglass canine statue anchored atop a warehouse on North Broadway has captured the hearts and minds of young and old alike for three generations. Nipper was a real-life dog in nineteenth-century England who was painted by the dog owner’s brother, Francis Barraud. He depicted the curious dog listening to a gramophone and titled it “His Master’s Voice.” It became an internationally recognized logo for several audio recording companies, including RCA.
