Eclipse Viewing Party

Eclipse Viewing Party

Aug. 21, 1:00PM – 4:00PM

On August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible across the continental United States. Albany, GA is in line to see an impressive 90% totality of this eclipse. Given the rarity of seeing this type of astronomical event, we would like to celebrate it by hosting a community-wide viewing party the day of the eclipse to bring the community together to learn and understand more about what they will be seeing. At this viewing party a specially-filtered telescope will be accessible under the guidance of our staff astronomer for guests to safely view the sun up close, pinhole camera making sessions will be open to teach individuals about safe sun watching methods, and a variety of other sun-related activities will be featured in our Science Museum free of charge for guests to explore and learn about our closest star, the sun. Educational programs about the eclipse will be played in the planetarium throughout the day. If the weather conditions that day impede outdoor viewing of the sun from our location, we are prepared to livestream the eclipse via NASA in our planetarium, so guests will still be able to see and experience it as it happens.
